Northern Michigan’s News Ecosystem

Our survey was conducted in the fall of 2023 across a region of approximately 23 counties in northern Michigan. This region includes some 50 news outlets.

It was conducted by Elizabeth Jensen, who has covered the media industry for more than 40 years, including at the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. She was most recently public editor for NPR in Washington, D.C.

On Dec. 1, 2023, we convened a group of community members and journalists from across northern Michigan to hear the results of the survey.

We also heard from Nick Mathews, assistant professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. His research includes local news, rural media environments and news audiences.

He delivered remarks to separate gatherings of community members and local journalists. Read both, below:
